i am pretty sure 2.2.4 is available at darwinports.   just not for 10.2 
which is really old.

Patches work fine on 10.3 with darwin ports version of gtk as a number 
of people are using them.  i think Thomas's problem is he is trying to 
make it work with an old version of the os which is not supported by 
darwinports, nor did i check out my patches against it.
