However, I'm eventually going to be converting an existing X/Motif Ada
tool to gtkada and I'd rather not generate the code. I just need some
simple working examples of how the drawing area is used.

Use the GLADE interface builder that vil provide the nessesary code:
1 .set options
ada soucecode remove support for GNOME
2 make a top window with a scrolable textarea inside (the textarea widget)
3. build
