I don't know if the following has a connection with your experience, but 
here is my experience on Windows.
Concerning Zlib with AWS, I have the following on my Windows machine 
with GNAT/GPS :

GPS comes with a libz.dll in the directory C:\GNAT\2010\bin that is 
dating from April 2004.
When I install AWS in the default directory , i.e in the GPS directories
a new  libz.dll is copied in the GNAT\2010\bin directory and then GPS 
crashes
When I reinstall the old libz.dll, GPS works again.
