Thanks to Juan who compiled a sample program we found out that
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=118435
wasn't a bug after all.
The lesson is: remove all the old dll's first! Don't just overwrite
them.

So I can switch to 2.2.4.1, great! Also it has the stock item strings in
many languages, and the locale dependency works too.
