Yes, internationalization has been much improved in gtk+ 2.0, including support
for right-to-left writtings, asian encodings, ... so they had to go to Unicode,
and therefore you need to convert your strings, which, being german, I assume
are latin-1.

You don't need this conversion if you are only working with ASCII characters
(typically english), since Unicode is compatible with ASCII.
