Did you build using that option?  I tried it and see no difference.  
The debugger still fails wanting a pty.

I fetched the source to GtkAda and it built without problems.  I 
fetched the source for GPS, untarred, ./configure --prefix=/usr/gnat 
--without-ptys , make, sudo make install.
It all seemed to go OK but when I use the new GPS I still have that 
problem.
