My bad; I did a copy from the wrong part of my session (testing in case
there as a typo in the instrutions). Doing it as suggested (really)
gives the same error:

(gdb) break gdk_x_error
Function "gdk_x_error" not defined.

What I don't understand is what's different from a fvwm session running
from console to a fvwm session running from dtlogin and why this affects
gps (and aparenlty only gps).
